Flynn becomes a millionaire and moves his family out of the tough New York tenement known as "Hell's End." As the years go by, Mary Flynn and her brother Jimmie lose track of their childhood friend, Jack Donovan, but on a slumming expedition, Mary renews her acquaintance with Jack, now the leader of a notorious group of gangsters and crooked politicians. Their conversation arouses the jealousy of Belle Burns, who is infatuated with him. She incites a fight between Jack and Hank Dillon, who is jealous of Jack's power, and in the brawl, Jack is seriously injured. After his release from the hospital, he helps Mary with her Red Cross work, and the two fall in love. Jack defeats his rival in a fight and regains his prestige, but soon he abandons the gangsters and finds happiness with the girl he loves in working to better the conditions in Hell's End.
