Synopsis

Years after she is kidnapped in India, Hester is sent by a group of revolutionaries to England to recover a sacred ruby from her father, Sir Christopher Madgwick. Soon after arriving, however, she falls in love with Redgell, Sir Christopher's estate manager, and decides to disavow her allegiance to the revolutionaries. Then, Sir Christopher dies, and when his son Eric, looking for the ruby, breaks into the coffin, he discovers that his father had been poisoned, and accuses Hester of murder. A servant clears her, however, by detailing Sir Christopher's obsessive fear of premature burial, which, finally, had been realized, and then by describing how, as a precaution against being buried alive, Sir Christopher long ago had left instructions to have a vial of poison placed in his coffin. Scotland Yard then rounds up the revolutionaries who followed Hester to England, after which she and Redgell make plans for their marriage.
