Synopsis

Rodney Graham, a steel magnate, divorces his wife Alice because of an accident that makes her unable to bear him an heir. He pursues debutante Katherine Dale, whose lover, Dick Allen, a civil engineer, dies on the eve of their wedding, and with the help of Katherine's ambitious mother, Graham persuades her to marry him. When Katherine dies after giving birth to Rodney, Jr., Graham's stepbrother, Arthur Haynes, angrily prophesies Graham's eventual demise. After Graham centers his life on his son's development, Rodney, Jr. falls in love with Haynes' daughter Ruth. Graham objects to the match because of his antagonism to Haynes, until Alice persuades him to allow it. Graham then discovers that Rodney, Jr. was actually Dick Allen's child, but in the act of changing his will, Graham becomes paralyzed and is forced to watch the wedding helplessly in a wheel chair, then dies soon afterward.
