Synopsis

When her unfaithful playboy husband, J. Lawrence Challoner, is accused of murder, Miriam gives William Murgatroyd, the district attorney, her entire fortune of $500,000 in exchange for a guarantee of an acquittal. Even after taking the bribe, however, William prosecutes hard and obtains a conviction. Later, another man confesses to the murder, and Lawrence is released, but he and his wife are now penniless because of the size of the payoff to William. They live in the slum, where Lawrence tries hard to reform himself of all his bad habits. After he has succeeded, William confesses that he double-crossed Miriam so that an impoverished Lawrence would be compelled to make himself into a "new man." Satisfied that Lawrence has done precisely that, he returns the money.
