Synopsis
In the gold rush days of '49, Kate Carewe is the reigning dance hall queen of Huxley's Gulch. When Minister Ralph Bowen arrives to drive wickedness from the town, the rugged miners, gamblers, and women scorn him, especially Kate, who is incensed that Ralph assumes that she is a "scarlet woman." After "Three-Card" Duncan shoots Oliver Kemp, the proprietor of the saloon in which Kate dances, over a game of draw poker, Kate challenges him to a poker game to win back the saloon, with the stakes that she will become his bride if she loses. Kate wins and takes care of Kemp's daughter Ruth. Soon a plague of pestilence hits the town, driving the townspeople to the hills. Kate and Ralph remain, and when Ralph sees Kate nurse two children, his opinion of her changes. Their developing love is interrupted when Duncan arrives, seeking vengeance on Kate. Ralph rescues her, but is losing his fight with Duncan when Marshall Leland enters and shoots Duncan dead.
