Synopsis

This documentary on boxing's heavyweight champions covers the years from 1882 to 1929. Highlighted are film clips of John L. Sullivan, Gentleman Jim Corbett (in scenes filmed by Thomas Edison in 1894), the first filmed title bout in 1897 (between Corbett and Bob Fitzsimmons), the 1899 fight between Jim Jeffries and Tom Sharkey, and Jack Johnson taking the title from Tommy Burns in 1907 and then losing it in the controversial 1915 fight with Jess Willard. Jack Dempsey is shown clowning with Charles Chaplin and Douglas Fairbanks, later savagely beating Willard, and ultimately losing his crown to Gene Tunney. Briefly spotlighted in the film are other prominent personalities of the times--Bat Masterson, Wyatt Earp, Carry Nation, Lillian Russell, and Theodore Roosevelt.
