Synopsis

Sal Gratton, a London "coster" girl, rejects Bill Sproat, a bully, for Joe Brown, another costermonger with whom she has fallen in love, and they are married. Following the birth of their son, Sal suddenly falls heir to a fortune, and they resolve to spend it all to educate their boy in ignorance of his parentage so that he may become a gentleman. Herbert, after his graduation, becomes a notorious turfman and loses his money; his snobbish fiancée, Lady Diana Crowes, dismisses him; and learning of his parentage, he returns to Sal and Joe penniless. The Great War brings him to his senses, and he is reunited with Diana in a war hospital, softened by the tragedy. Returning to London, Herbert finds that his parents have been evicted and sent to the poorhouse; they are reunited and live happily with their son and Diana.
