Synopsis

When the Earl of Rochester meets Victor Jones, an American stranded in London, he decides to capitalize on his remarkable resemblance to the latter. Hounded by creditors and blackmailers and estranged from his wife, the earl decides to switch identities with Jones. After getting the American drunk, the earl deposits him on the steps of his mansion, then kills himself. The next morning, Jones is confronted with the news that a man identified as Victor Jones has committed suicide and finds himself saluted as the real earl. Making the best of the situation, Jones tries to straighten out the dead earl's difficulties. He defeats a trio of blackmailers, recovers the earl's compromising letters and wins the affections of the countess, who thinks a wonderful change for the better has taken place in her husband. Finally, the American confesses his real identity and wins the countess' love, and the pair returns to America.
