Synopsis

Athletic and fun-loving John Peabody tires of office life in Philadelphia. John's father sends him to the North woods lumber camp of John's uncle, "Wolf" John, who, believing John to be effeminate like his father, hires John under the name of "John Mudd" to make a man out of him. After winning a lumber sawing contest and subduing drunken fighting lumberjacks, John falls in love with Wolf's adopted daughter Belle, who responds to his affections and rejects her former suitor, camp foreman "Bull" Bart. Furious at John, Bart quits and joins the lumber trust, which tries to obtain a desirable timber tract from Wolf, whose contract includes a time limit for clearing it away. Because Wolf has a weak heart, John, now foreman, takes it upon himself to foil Bart's plans. After John is wounded during a gun battle against the trust, and the saloon the rival factions frequent burns down, John kills Bart in a street fight. Wolf then makes John his partner and Belle becomes John's fiancée.

Notes

The novel first appeared in serial form in Adventure Magazine. Most of the film was shot near Chattanooga, TN. The filmmakers used the Pan-Cro system of interior lighting which allowed them to film in interior locations without constructing sets. This film was re-issued in five reels in December 1920 on a state rights basis by Kremer Film Features.
