Synopsis

After growing up and working for years on the Rexford estate, Martin Henchford fights with the haughty, cruel Lord Rexford and accidentally kills him. Unseen and unsuspected, Martin leaves England and flees to New York where he finds employment as a construction worker. While building an underwater tunnel, Martin rescues a fellow employee from drowning, but his heroic deed is tainted by a vision of the dead Lord Rexford. Industrious and determined to succeed, Martin attracts the attention of his employer, Elmer Bradford, and becomes not only his partner in the construction business, but his son-in-law as well. On the night of his wedding, however, Martin is again plagued by visions of Lord Rexford. Five years later Martin is elected Governor of New York but soon after suffers a nervous and physical breakdown brought on by his recurring, nightmarish imaginings and is ordered by his doctor to take a vacation. Driven by inner demons, Martin returns to England and the Rexford estate. Standing on the spot where he struck the fatal blow, Martin collapses and dies.
