Synopsis

Young wife Ruth Hayes, swayed by the promises of song plugger Raymond Wells to make her a Broadway star, is on the verge of leaving her husband when her father, John Graham, relates the story of his own life. When Ruth was just a baby, her mother, Flora, became infatuated with Frank Trevor, John's business associate. Faced with John's ultimatum that she must choose between the two men, Flora leaves her husband and child to go with Trevor. After the divorce, Flora marries Trevor, only to find his affection waning as he becomes involved in an affair with another woman. When Trevor deserts his wife just as she is about to become the mother of his child, Flora writes John in despair and he hurries to her, reaching her side just before she dies. Enraged, John seeks out Trevor and kills him, but is acquitted of the crime. Thus learning the hard lesson of the law of compensation, Ruth decides to remain with her husband.
