Synopsis
John Murdock, haunted by the memory of what he believes to have been an unrequited love, neglects his work, and through his miscalculation a disastrous train wreck occurs. He is discharged and wanders about in search of the woman responsible for his downfall. Meanwhile, in New York, Mary Stanhope, being sued for divorce by her husband, remains silent until the judge rules in favor of the husband, to whom is awarded custody of a child; she then unfolds a story of disloyalty, cruelty, and abuse, and the judge is so affected that he reverses the decision and awards her custody of the child. Later, in the Adirondacks, Mary meets John Murdock, now a tramp, and he recognizes her as the woman he loved. Attempting to kill the child, he learns from Mary that it is his own, and affected by the child's charm he decides to reform and is reconciled with Mary.
