Synopsis

After defeating the Moors in battle, Don Juan of Austria returns to Madrid a national hero. His half brother King Philip suspects that Don Juan has designs on his throne and opposes his love affair with Dolores of Mendoza. To thwart the budding romance, Philip pressures Dolores' father, the commander of the king's guard, to halt the relationship. The loyal Mendoza entreats Dolores to desert Don Juan, and when she refuses to comply, he locks her up for shipment to a convent. Inez, Dolores' blind sister, changes clothing with the captive and helps her to escape. Fearing for Don Juan's safety, Dolores flees to his home, where Philip shows up with Mendoza, demanding to see his daughter. Don Juan, hiding Dolores, denies all charges and is stabbed and presumed dead by Philip. Dreading that Don Juan's death will cost Philip his throne, Mendoza nobly agrees to accept the blame for the murder but is saved when the court jester reveals that Don Juan is only wounded.
