Synopsis

In a small New England fishing village populated largely by Portuguese, Ana Silva keeps the general store in order to provide for her adored son, Tony. When a wealthy woman named Hattie Smith arrives in the village for a summer vacation, her daughter, Betty, flirts with Tony and upsets his relationship with his sweetheart, Rosa Pina. Tony falls in love with the irresponsible flapper and steals Mrs. Smith's diamond bracelet in order to finance a trip to New York with Betty. Ana discovers the theft and confronts Tony with the evidence; he attempts to run away, and his mother hits him over the head with a shovel, knocking him unconscious. She then arranges with Captain Bamby for Tony to be taken away on a boat in order to save him from arrest by Sheriff Parker, who has discovered Tony's misdeed. Rosa sails away with Tony on Bamby's boat, and Ana gives her heart to Felipe.
