Synopsis

Countess Hélène, who is engaged to Ivan, a dissolute scion of the nobility, attends a masquerade alone and is accosted by six young men of Ivan's set who take her by force to an inn and cast lots for her. Sascha, son of a grand duke, assaults her; and to forestall trouble, his father accuses Hélène of being in league with Nihilists. Following a hearing, she is exiled to Siberia; but the remorseful Sascha arranges to have her rescued and sent to Vienna. There Hélène becomes a cafe dancer, and Sascha, under the name of Alexander, falls in love with her. Her desire for revenge leads her to return to Russia as his "official wife," and he leads her to believe that his friend Nicholas is the guilty party. Before leaving for the war, Sascha discloses his identity; following the Revolution, Sascha flees to Vienna, destitute, and there meets Hélène, who forgives him and finds happiness in his love.
