Synopsis

During the late 1700's, Lieutenant Francis Burnham, an American newly arrived in Paris, promptly accumulates a huge gambling debt to the Marquis du Tremignon, whose recent attempt to kidnap the Countess de Villars was ruined by the intervention of a stranger. Tremignon now believes that he can force Gabrielle to marry him by compromising her, so he offers to remove the debt if Francis will bring him an article of the countess' clothing. Francis, who thinks that Gabrielle loves Tremignon, agrees. Then, when he comes to her room, she recognizes him as the stranger who saved her from the kidnapping, and tells him of her hatred for Tremignon. Gabrielle gives him her slipper, however, to placate Tremignon temporarily, but afterward, Francis denounces the marquis, for which authorities throw him in jail. Both the countess and American ambassador Benjamin Franklin come to his aid, however, after which he is pardoned by the King Louis XVI and then marries Gabrielle.
