Synopsis

Mario Nanni, a poor but proud artist living in New York's Little Italy, boasts that he is the cousin of the great tenor, Cesare Carulli, in order to impress Rosa Ventura, the girl he passionately loves. Although Rosa returns Mario's affections, her father wishes her to marry Robert Bombardi, the proprietor of a fruit and vegetable stand. After attending Carulli's performance of I Pagliacci , Mario and Rosa visit a café, where Carulli fails to recognize his cousin. Later the sculptor tries to give Carulli a bust, but the tenor's secretary mistakes him for an aspiring singer and turns him away. Mario's status in Little Italy has plummetted, and even Rosa is ready to abandon him when Carulli, having learned of Mario's troubles, visits the artist's studio and loudly commissions a bronze bust from his cousin.

Notes

This film was originally scheduled for release October 20, 1918 but was delayed because of the influenza epidemic. In some reviews, the Mario Nanni character is called Tomaso Longo. Reviewers note this as Caruso's first film. Carolina White was the operatic soprano of the Metropolitan. The film includes scenes showing the interior and exterior of the Metropolitan Opera House in New York, Caruso's dressing room there, and his home.
