Synopsis

Esther Whitaker loves Caleb Tilden, but her father, the owner of a sailing vessel, has betrothed her to Jacob Babcock, his first mate. At the instigation of her grandfather, Esther marries Caleb secretly, and when she becomes pregnant, her father, believing that she has dishonored herself, takes her aboard his vessel. Suspecting the truth, Whitaker confronts Caleb, and in the ensuing fight, strikes him down and leaves, believing that he has killed the young man. In reality, Caleb has just been stunned, and upon gaining consciousness, watches hopelessly as Whitaker's ship sets sail with Esther as prisoner. Whitaker tries to force his daughter to marry Babcock, but when she declares that she would sooner throw herself into the sea, he abandons his project. On the voyage, Esther gives birth to her baby, and as the ship approaches its home port, Babcock leads a mutiny in which Whitaker is killed. During the upheaval, a fierce storm breaks and the ship is sunk. Caleb leads the rescue party, and is overjoyed when he secures the raft upon which Esther and her baby are clinging.
