Synopsis

Although Dorenzo murders Betty Herron, a jury convicts her brother James, and sentences him to life imprisonment. Then, after James saves the governor's life during a prison revolt, he is made a trustee and falls in love with the governor's daughter Ruth, even though he has yet to meet her. Later, Ruth's brother Larry comes to the warden for help in exposing a cardsharp, and the warden suggests James for the job. Temporarily released from jail, James goes to Larry's card game, where he introduces himself to Ruth as "the man from nowhere." When Larry points out the cardsharp, James recognizes him as Dorenzo. James skillfully reveals him to be a cheater, and then accuses him of murdering Betty. The two men duel with swords, and just before Dorenzo dies from a stab wound, he confesses to the murder. Then, freed from jail, James begins a romance with Ruth.

Notes

Moving Picture World and the synopsis in the copyright descriptions call Joseph Granby's character Antonio Gaudio instead of Dorenzo. It is unclear from the 1918 MPSD whether Bennett Molter served on the film as an assistant director or an actor.
