Synopsis

Hoping to keep her stepson John's fortune in her family, Mrs. Wharton works day and night to break up his marriage and to get him engaged to her daughter Beatrice. As part of the plan, Mrs. Wharton tells Lorenz to pursue John's wife Florence, and makes John believe that Florence has begun an affair with her new suitor. John quickly divorces Florence, who, in an attempt to maintain her honor and good name, becomes engaged to Lorenz. Meanwhile, Mrs. Wharton finally convinces Beatrice, who really loves Lorenz, to marry John. Before the wedding, however, Beatrice and Lorenz decide to elope, and Florence learns of the part Mrs. Wharton played in breaking up her marriage. With the plot, as well as his own role in it, now common knowledge, Lorenz kills himself, after which John and Florence are reconciled and remarry.
