Synopsis

Masha, a young Russian emigrant traveling to America as a steerage passenger, is saved from an officer's advances by David Harding, an American civil engineer and contractor riding in second class, who fights the officer. J. J. Walton, a self-made political boss and contractor traveling first class, notices Masha and, upon landing, pursues her to her sister Olga's house. Olga's brutish husband John forces Masha to accept Walton's offer to be his maid. After Walton breaks into Masha's room the first night, she leaves, but when Walton promises to marry and educate her, Masha becomes his mistress. Meanwhile, David wins a government contract over Walton's company to build a large dam in Arizona. Walton and his ring plan to dynamite it, and he uses Masha, by threatening to have Olga arrested for murder, to lure David from the dam. The dam bursts, but Walton dies when the subsequent flood destroys the house from which he watches. After David is knocked unconscious trying to save a little girl, Masha finds him, and they confess their mutual love.

Trivia

Notes

The role of "Walton's secretary" is only credited as "Deane" in contemporary sources, but it is most probable that the actor was Sydney Deane. This was stage actress Valeska Suratt's first film. According to a news item, she designed the gowns which she wore in the film.
