Synopsis

Mark Sabre engages Effie Bright, a girl of Tidborough, to keep his coldblooded, snobbish wife, Mabel, company while he is at war. When Sabre comes home wounded, Effie, who has been dismissed, comes with her baby to ask for shelter. Mabel leaves Sabre when he takes Effie in, and he is subsequently ostracized. A scandal breaks when Effie kills her baby and commits suicide. Sabre has a nervous breakdown as a result of a coroner's examination conducted on the basis of untrue and incriminating evidence, but Sabre's former sweetheart, Nona, whose husband has died in the war, comes to his aid.
