Synopsis

Ellen Hill, a nervous but very rich young lady, goes to the hills for a rest, and there she meets kindly Ben Dixon, owner of the Dixon gold mine. They fall in love and decide to marry, but Ellen changes her mind when Ben comes to visit her and her father and demonstrates manners that are hardly acceptable in high society. Ben then gets shanghaied to a rough ship; in the meantime, the people back home assume he has committed suicide. Following this line, Charles Temple, an avaricious stockbroker, bids for Dixon's property but is thwarted when Dixon is released and returns to the city. Ellen has since fallen in love with young George Perry, who was previously employed by Dixon to teach him some manners. Dixon gives them his blessing and sadly goes off to his mines, reconciled to a bachelor fate.
