Synopsis

Forger Reever McCall and his daughter, Saidee, narrowly escape the police with the aid of reformed crook Steve Cline, whose brother has been killed by Detective William Mallory. Later, while serving as a war nurse, Saidee falls in love with Philip Logan, one of her patients and son of the governor. After the war everyone is again brought together by a banquet given for Governor Logan by Mallory, now a political boss. Mallory demands marriage of Saidee in return for silence about her past; Reever kills Mallory; and Steve takes the blame. Saidee attempts to save Steve from execution with a pardon she has forged but arrives too late. The gallows fails to function, however, and Reever confesses to the murder. (Reviews call attention to the fact that Detective Mallory kills Cline in cold blood in the presence of fellow officers and receives no official punishment for his crime.)
