Synopsis

Deputy sheriff Jack Saunders interrupts a smuggling operation headed by Bill Steward, forcing the smugglers to flee without the jewels. Back in town, Steward's girl, Tessie, warns Bill that the sheriff and his deputy know about the smugglers and that Jack plans to patrol the border trail that Steward's men use. Steward and Joe Kent, one of his men, quarrel over Tessie, and Kent angrily leaves the gang to work on his own. After he leaves, Kent comes across Sally, the sheriff's daughter, and her friend Betty as the women are swimming. He grabs their clothes and threatens to take them, but Jack, who is returning from a visit to his friend Henry's mine, intervenes. Sometime later, Jack is knocked unconscious in a struggle with Kent, and when he comes to, Kent's dead body is slung across his horse. Jack cannot remember what occurred, so the sheriff sends Jack and another deputy back to the river where Kent was killed to try and uncover what really happened. On the way there, Tessie takes a shot at Jack, convinced that he is Kent's killer, but misses. Believing that Tessie killed Jack, Steward confesses that he killed Kent. Meanwhile, Jack hides out at Henry's shack to maintain the fiction that he is dead. Tessie, furious about Steward's betrayal, tells Sally that Steward is Kent's murderer. At the same time, Jack sends a note to Sally by his horse, Starlight, asking her to meet him at Henry's house. Sally tells Jack about Steward and also reveals the time and place of his next smuggling operation. With the help of Sally and Henry, Jack rounds up the smugglers. Henry finally uncovers a rich vein of ore, and Jack asks Sally to marry him.
