Synopsis

The Seigneur of Pontiac, estranged relative of Louis Racine, dies in Paris, leaving no will but a provision that 50,000 francs be paid Madelinette, Louis' wife, making possible her operatic career. Tardiff, former servant of the seigneur and an enemy of Louis, insinuates that there is a hidden will; however, Louis takes the title of his deceased relative and his estate. In a struggle with Tardiff, Louis' back is injured. As Madelinette prepares to make her operatic debut in Paris, George Fournel arrives from England with a letter from the seigneur indicating his rights to the estate. Meanwhile, following his wife's departure, Louis has an operation performed on his back, but it is unsuccessful. On returning, Madelinette is horrified by her husband's condition and decides to give up her career to care for him. She later discovers the hidden will, but it is stolen by Tardiff and taken to Fournel, who fulfills her request to burn it; in a jealous rage Louis kills Tardiff, then commits suicide. Madelinette finds happiness with Fournel and pursues her career.
