Synopsis

Life-long pacifist Margaret Ardrath falls into an uneasy sleep after hearing her fiancé Robert Ogden praised as the model of the modern fighting man. Years later, when war breaks out in Europe, her fears are realized as Robert enlists in England, and then compounded when her son Donald decides to join in the fighting along the United States-Mexico border. To keep Donald from going, Margaret gives him a heart depressant, but his subsequent bad health not only prevents him from joining the army, it also causes his sweetheart, Patricia Landon, to break up with him. Donald then swears off women and becomes an alcoholic, after which word comes that Robert has been killed in battle. Despondent, Margaret takes a drug overdose, and then wakes up to discover that everything about the future had been a dream.
