Synopsis

When her husband, a banker, dies, Katherine Wetherell inherits his modest estate. Despite the family's reduced circumstances, Katherine's son William lavishes money on Sadie, an adventuress, then steals one of his mother's necklaces for her. Later, Katherine is heartbroken to discover that William and Sadie are married. Katherine's grief is intensified when she discovers that her son Walter has neglected his studies to pursue Sadie's sister Bess, a chorus girl. William, given a job by his sister Ardath's boyfriend, Harry Lake, in the Lake family bank, embezzles money and forges his mother's name on a promissory note. Despite the forgery and William's dismissal, Katherine makes good the note. When Walter insists on marrying Bess, Katherine invites her home and asks her to cook dinner. Indignant, Bess breaks her engagement to Walter. Finally, William leaves Sadie and promises to help reform Walter.
