Synopsis

After her father and two brothers are killed in the Kentucky mountains when revenue officers raid their still, Cynthia and her mother go to New York, where Cynthia meets Philip Ashford and gets a job in his office working for Roger Hampton, a wealthy stockbroker. Hampton is attracted to Cynthia and schemes to turn her attentions from Philip, whose father, unknown to him, is a drunken outcast, by tempting Philip to indulge in his inherited vice. After Cynthia and Philip become engaged, Philip, while intoxicated, forges Hampton's signature to a check. Hampton plans to prosecute, but news that his beloved daughter has died from an overdose of sleeping powder given to her by her nurse, who was in a hurry to go drinking with the chauffeur, causes Hampton to curtail his seduction of Cynthia, and forgive Philip. The nurse and the chauffeur die when they drive while intoxicated, then Cynthia promises to marry Philip if he stops drinking.
