Synopsis
Newly elected justice of the peace Creed Bonbright is determined to make the mountain men of the Cumberlands accept the law and reject feuding. Then, he falls in love with Judith, and so her moonshiner cousin, Blatchley Turrentine, who wants to marry Judith, plots to drive Creed out of the mountains. The two men fight, and when Creed throws Blatchley off a cliff, Blatchley pretends to be dead in order to have Creed arrested for murder. Enraged, the mountaineers refuse to wait for a trial, and set out to lynch Creed. Meanwhile, Blatchley comes out of hiding to propose to Judith, who tricks him into coming to the mob's makeshift gallows. The crowd cools down after seeing that Blatchley is really alive, and then Creed and Judith begin making plans for their marriage.
