Synopsis

Magda rebels against the rigid regimentation and narrow viewpoint of her small village and is banished from home. Self-reliant and proud, she goes to the city to study singing with a seemingly limitless potential until she falls in love with Kellner and agrees to marry him. Magda discovers too late that the ceremony was a ruse and finds herself alone with a child to support. While she is singing in the street and in cheap dance halls, Magda's former teacher hears her and under his tutelage, she develops into a great artist. A reconciliation is effected between Magda and her parents, and when Kellner agrees to marry her now that she is famous, her father insists that she go through with the ceremony to save the family honor. Magda refuses, and in a rage, her father is about to kill her when he dies of shock, leaving Magda to decide her future for herself.
