Synopsis
This film documents the journalist I.F. Stone and the newspaper he published for almost 20 years. Stone, at one time the leading non-establishment newspaper man in the United States, began publishing his own paper in the 1950s when McCarthyism made him unemployable. He wrote, edited, proofed, and mailed the press run himself, and the circulation of the highly influential paper had reached 70,000 by the time he closed it down in 1971. Stone's publication was the first to question President Johnson's rationale for the Vietnam War, and the first to correct official government information about underground testing. The iconoclastic Stone is shown at work on the paper and lecturing. .
