Synopsis

James McQuade, the political boss of a metropolis, is in love with Julia Calvert, a beautiful young woman who, in turn, loves Daniel Harrington, the district attorney. In order to get Julia to the altar, McQuade resorts to blackmail, framing Julia's father for embezzlement and then offering to exchange her father's acquittal for her hand in marriage. Julie consents, and they become man and wife; he later becomes jealous of Harrington, and orders his brother, Robert, to keep an eye on the district attorney. McQuade then discovers that Robert himself is attempting to seduce Julia, and McQuade kills him, placing the blame on Corrine Stanton, an actress. Discovering that Corrine is his own daughter and striken with remorse, McQuade takes poison and confesses to the murder of his brother. Julia is thus free to wed Harrington.
