Synopsis

Sam Starling, an easygoing spendthrift, is left by his wife, Phoebe, owing to the constant annoyance of creditors, and he sets out to prove himself. He visits a money-losing island hotel, and without consent of Perkins, the proprietor, he begins an extensive advertising campaign promoting the hotel as a health resort. Phoebe's mother and Sam contrive to have Phoebe visit the resort. Sam enlists the aid of a female doctor, but just as his boat is about to depart with his invalids aboard, he discovers that the doctor is not present. In consequence, he himself impersonates her, advising Phoebe to make up with her husband and extolling Sam's virtues. It is revealed that the boat is actually a rumrunner, and Sam is forced to "vamp" the bootlegger captain to save Phoebe; he signals for help and has the villains arrested. Sam's resort scheme is successful, and he is happily reunited with his wife.
