Synopsis

In 1921, John D. Maximillian controls the world's money interests. After Cyrus Livingstone, Maximillian's junior partner in a steel works, propositions stenographer Hope Ross, her sweetheart George Crosby defends her. Maximillian's daughter Ruth, who is innocent of her father's business dealings, prevents Livingstone from discharging Crosby. After Maximillian throws an outrageous banquet to humiliate his striking workers, they break in just as Livingstone starts to assault Ruth. Crosby rescues Ruth and dissuades the workers from violence. Ruth falls in love with Crosby, but later, while doing charity work with Hope, she realizes that Crosby and Hope love each other. Meanwhile, Livingstone, who has been financially destroyed by Maximillian, joins with an anarchist to kidnap Ruth and hold her for ransom. After they abduct Hope by mistake, Ruth and Crosby pursue the kidnappers' yacht through dangerous reefs. When the yacht is wrecked, Crosby fights with Livingstone, who drowns as Hope is rescued. After Maximillian is killed, and his palace is destroyed during a lightning storm, Ruth runs his empire justly. Now the steelworks' general manager, Crosby marries Hope.
