Synopsis

In search of work to pay for the care of her sick mother, Consuelo, a country girl, moves to Mexico City where, with the help of her cousin Concha, she finds work in a stocking factory. There she meets René, the wealthy womanizer who owns the factory. René declares his love for Consuelo, and although at first she resists his charm, she eventually capitulates and the couple marry. Soon after the wedding, René becomes restless and resumes his liaison with his former mistress, María Luisa. When he squanders his wealth, however, María Luisa casts him aside and René suffers a stroke that paralyzes him. In disgrace, René is abandoned by all his friends, except for the faithful Consuelo, who is resigned to sharing his adversity. One day, Consuelo meets Luis Angel, a violinist, and falls in love with him. Luis begs her to divorce René and marry him, but Consuelo refuses, out of loyalty to René. When Consuelo refuses his proposal, Luis marries the girl his parents have picked out for him, and Consuelo, unseen, watches the ceremony. Meanwhile, René, overhearing the neighbors gossiping about Consuelo and Luis, realizes that he has wasted his life and throws away his life-maintaining medicine.
