Synopsis

Convicted on circumstantial evidence, Ruth Payne is sentenced to ten years in prison for the murder of her piano teacher. While incarcerated, she befriends Maizie, a bootlegger's moll, who, upon her release, gets a false confession for the teacher's murder from a woman who has poisoned herself and is dying. Ruth is released from prison and moves in with Maizie. The son of the district attorney who sentenced her, Tony Halliday, becomes her friend. In the meantime, Maizie's boyfriend Joe and Brennan, another gangster, plan to frame Tony for a murder. Joe calls Ruth and warns her to send Tony to a particular speakeasy, or he will reveal the false confession and Maizie will be incarcerated for life, as it would be her fourth offense. To repay her debt to Maizie, Ruth follows Joe's instructions. Maizie tries to warn Ruth, but Joe shoots her, and police arrest Tony at a roadhouse, where it appears he killed a gangster. Maizie recovers from her gunshot wound and makes a deal with the police to reveal the real murderer if Tony is released. With police hidden in Maizie's room, she asks Joe and Brennan over, but when they insist on searching the place, they are shot by the police. Tony and Ruth are finally free to pursue their romance.
