Synopsis
During World War I, the wealthy but cowardly Robert Gibbs marries the wash girl, Susie Simpkins, in order to escape the draft. Having supposed Robert brave and patriotic, Susie is dismayed to hear his father upbraiding him for his cowardice, and when she learns why Robert married her, she leaves him, announcing that she will not be a "Mrs. Slacker." Susie decides to don a uniform and fight in the war herself, but that night, she uncovers a German plot to blow up the city reservoir and is captured by the spies. Robert, who has begun to feel ashamed of himself, wanders by, and realizing that his wife is in danger, rescues her. The bombing is prevented, and later Susie looks on proudly as her husband enlists.
