Synopsis

During a fox hunt, King Charles II of England and actress Nell Gwyn meet and fall in love. Nell learns that Louise, the Duchess of Portsmouth, is conspiring with the Duke of Buckingham to place Charles at the mercy of the king of France. At a midnight supper at the Blue Boar Inn, Nell, through her wit and good humor, makes the duchess appear foolish, and later, she discovers Louise's plan to deliver important documents to the French king. Disguised as a young Irishman, Nell attends the duchess' ball, where she wins the traitorous woman's confidence. Promising to deliver the papers herself, Nell secures the documents and returns them to King Charles, who now realizes Louise's duplicity. In the end, Nell reveals that she was the charming young Irishman at the duchess' ball.
