Synopsis
Reared by a cultured mother and a semi-retired burglar, Nancy develops a distrust of the law when her father dies while serving time for a crime he did not commit. After an aged fence, Jonathon Twist, helps Nancy support her two little sisters, she meets and marries the elderly Lord Cleveland, but he soon dies, without leaving a will. Because Nancy is not English, the estate goes to Cleveland's nephew. Nancy keeps their American home, but she has no money to maintain it. After a series of robberies by a mysterious figure called "The Bird" plague New York high society, ace detective Jim Garside investigates and falls in love with Nancy. When Twist is found dead, Jim, who suspects that Nancy, as The Bird, used Twist as a fence, is about to arrest her, when he learns that Twist died of a heart attack. Nancy confesses and although Jim wants to let her go free, she pays her debt to society and afterward becomes Jim's wife.
