Synopsis
Found abandoned as an infant, Babbie is taken in and raised by Lord Rintoul of Thrums, Scotland. Although she is brought up as an aristocrat, Babbie prefers to dress and act like a wild gypsy. She eventually turns her capricious attentions on Gavin Desart, the village minister, a priggish young man who publicly scorns and upbraids her for her flirtations while secretly longing for more. The feisty girl becomes involved in a weaver's strike and, after the workers rebel, is arrested for inciting them to riot. She escapes from jail, however, and runs to the minister for protection from the police. Circumstances force Gavin to confess his love for the gypsy and after many adventures, including an abortive marriage to Lord Rintoul, her true parentage is revealed and she and Gavin wed.
