Synopsis

Sam Blair, a poor mountain farmer of Tennessee, takes the "Widder" Gasper as his second wife, and she soon lives up to the vicious tradition of stepmothers. Selah, his daughter, has the firm friendship of her dog, King, who saves her from her stepmother's tyranny. Kitty Carlyle, a musical comedy star vacationing in the hills, is rescued from her runaway horse by Selah and King, and her gratitude takes the form of a $1,000 check to pay for Selah's education. After Sam dies, Clint Sifton, who loves Selah, advises her to hide the money from the "Widder" and her son, Bud. When King hides the money, the "Widder" and one of her moonshiners take Selah to a cave and threaten her; Bud gets into a fight over her and starts a fire in the cave, but King and Clint arrive to the rescue. The "Widder" tries to escape, but King forces her over a cliff to her death.
