Synopsis

Meyer Rubens, a poor Jewish tailor on New York's East Side, is constantly reproached by his wife, Esther, whose sister, Reba, has made a wealthy marriage. Reba's unscrupulous husband, Maurice, persuades Meyer to buy some apparently worthless oil stock that reaps a fortune. With great wealth at their command, Meyer and Esther move to Fifth Avenue and live in luxury; Meyer, however, finds himself in constant difficulty because of his ignorance of social graces. At Reba's suggestion, Esther decides to get a divorce. Maurice employs Lottie to flirt with Meyer and create a case against him, but his plan fails. Ida, who is in love with Meyer's son, Lew, informs Esther that Meyer is actually adored by the society set, while she herself is merely tolerated. As a result she returns to Meyer, and Lew and Ida are happily married.
