Synopsis

Lea Montrose marries Dorian Vanderveer, who is rich, rather than Jack Harley, whom she loves. After a happy honeymoon, Vanderveer returns one night from a lawyer's dinner greatly intoxicated. Lea's initial disgust increases when she learns that his drinking is habitual and inherited. Although Vanderveer promises to reform, his many failures cause Lea to lose hope. She joins a cult led by Dr. Studholm Charters that has become popular with society women, but her only real solace comes when Jack returns to New York after becoming a successful engineer. The birth of Lea's child causes Vanderveer to go away to seriously attempt a cure. Charters, discovering that the child is Jack's, threatens to reveal this unless Lea has sex with him. When Vanderveer learns of Charters' demand, he gets drunk and quietly chokes Charters to death. He then forgives Lea and shoots himself. After Lea tells Jack that she always loved him best, they marry.
