Synopsis

It is a tradition in a certain section of England that an unwed, eldest daughter must wear green stockings whenever a younger sister gets married. Celia Faraday has gone through this humiliation once, but refuses to endure it again when yet another younger sister, Phyllis, threatens to marry Robert Tarver. Instead, Celia makes up a fiancé for herself, calls him Colonel Smith, and even writes to him. Then, by accident, one of the letters gets mailed. It is delivered to an actual Colonel Smith, who, understandably intrigued by reading the plans for his upcoming marriage, decides to introduce himself to his "fiancée." When he meets her, they fall in love, and Celia quickly marries the flesh and blood version of her fictional sweetheart.
