Synopsis

Raimond de Mornay loves his cousin Claire, but it is his brother Louis who finally marries her. Hoping that a change in locale will cheer him up, Raimond leaves for India. Then, after many years, he returns, believing that he no longer loves Claire. Soon, however, becoming uncontrollably jealous, he poisons Louis and hides his body in a large chest. Posing as a grieving brother, Raimond moves in with Claire, while the memory of the murder slowly drives him insane. Then, when she refuses to marry him, he opens the chest in front of Claire, and she dies of shock when she sees Louis' body. Years later, Raimond is living with Claire and Louis' son. Still brooding over the past, he tells his nephew the whole story, opens the chest to show him the body, and then dies.
