Synopsis

When Major Temple, an antique fanatic, vainly tries to purchase a green Buddha idol on a visit to China, he commissions Robert Ashton to steal the idol in return for the hand of his daughter, Muriel. After Ashton's successful return, he demands a cash bonus of $50,000 as well as Muriel's hand. Temple refuses and vows that Ashton shall not leave alive until he delivers the idol. That evening, Owen Morgan, an artist, arrives at the house seeking shelter from a rain storm and soon develops an interest in Muriel. Later, Muriel visits Ashton's room hoping to dissuade him from marrying her, but to no avail. The next morning Ashton is found dead in his room, with the doors bolted from the inside, an unfired revolver and Muriel's handkerchief on the floor; Major Temple, Morgan and Muriel are all suspects. After an adventurous chase in a Buddhist temple, all are cleared when Temple's servant confesses having startled Ashton in his sleep while peering into his window, resulting in Ashton accidentally impaling himself on an ornamental sword.
