Synopsis

Varge, taken from an orphanage and reared by Dr. and Mrs. Merton, assumes the blame when Harold, his stepbrother, kills his natural father in a fit of anger, so that his foster mother's grief will not be multiplied. In prison, Varge becomes a trustee and the warden's gardener after he protects a guard whom other convicts try to kill to make their escape. When the warden's daughter Janet learns about Varge's innocence, she begs for him to tell the truth, but he refuses. After he rescues Janet from a fire, he escapes because he is afraid of loving her. When a schooner on which Varge sails is struck by lightning, he comes to shore and finds Janet vacationing. Although she wants to elope, he returns to prison. When Mrs. Merton is dying, Varge visits. After her death, Harold is overheard pleading with Varge not to tell about the murder. Harold kills himself by tumbling down steps, and Varge, now free, marries Janet.
