Synopsis

Because his wife Valerie refuses to abandon her theatrical career, Justin Carew leaves her and accepts a position as Philo Ocumpaugh's private secretary. Philo's wife Marion, believing that a child will revive her loveless marriage, begs her physician, Dr. Pool, to find a baby for her, whereupon the doctor, knowing that Valerie is pregnant, forces her to sell her baby to Marion. While working in his Western mines, Philo hears that Marion has borne a baby girl, and consequently returns to his wife and little daughter Gwendolyn. Ten years later, Valerie retires from the stage and requests that Pool restore her long-lost daughter. Valerie now resides near the Ocumpaugh's, and when she realizes that Gwendolyn is her own child, she resolves to kidnap the girl so that Pool may not swindle her again. The child, however, has disappeared, but after various accusations are made, Marion confesses that, frightened of losing Gwendolyn, she hid her away in a secret room. Philo forgives his wife, who returns the girl to her real parents, while Justin and his reunited family begin a new life.
