Synopsis
Jim, the first mate on a ship carrying Moslem pilgrims, deserts his post when the craft strikes a derelict. He is brought before an admiralty court and loses his seaman's certificate. After several years of dissipation and vagabondage, Jim arrives in Patusan, where his past is unknown. He becomes a figure of respect, friend and advisor to the natives. Three of his former shipmates, who have turned to piracy, turn up, and Jim befriends them. They kill the rajah's son, and Jim's life is forfeit under the law. He is executed by the rajah, dying in the arms of Jewel, a girl with whom he has fallen in love.

Notes
Lord Jim marked the feature film debut of Duke Kahanamoku, the legendary surfer and Olympic champion, known as the "Father of Surfing." For additional information on Kahanamoku, for Wake of the Red Witch. In 1965, Columbia Pictures released another film based on Joseph Conrad's novel, also entitled Lord Jim, directed by Richard Brooks and starring Peter O'Toole (see AFI Catalog of Feature Films, 1961-70).
